Gary began playing at the age of five and has since gone on to represent NSW & AUSTRALIA at both junior & senior levels. He signed and played professionally with the Philadelphia Phillies from 1986 – 1989. Winning South Atlantic League Championship in 1988. Was a member of the Sydney Blues / Storm throughout the Australian National Leagues 10 year history.
In 1998 / 99 Australian Baseball League Season saw Gary get off to a great start before having to face the toughest challenge of his life. Gary was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer 3 weeks into the season. Missing only 2 weeks of the season after the operation Gary continued to play through out the 4 weeks of Radiation Treatment. Being a remarkable feat in itself Gary finished the Season with the 2nd highest batting average in the league and was runner up in the MVP award. He became the first Catcher in ABL history to win the Gold Glove Award.
In the 1999 Intercontinental Cup – Sydney, Gary was a hero in the Gold Medal game. He stepped to the plate with 2 out in the top of the 11th inning with the winning run on second base. Gary drove home the winning run with a game winning hit into centre field to take home the GOLD MEDAL
